Of the three main styles of bras (compression, encapsulation and combination), encapsulation bras are seen as the heroes for bigger boobs. However, with the advancement of fabric technology and new and exciting developments in the construction of bras, different features are arriving that might be a game changer for larger breasts.
The biggest challenge for big breasts, and the area of the market that is least well catered for is big cup and small back combination. Most DD+ bras start at a 30″ underband which can be really tricky.
Key features to look for:
- Encapsulation/combination style: separates the breast and offers well rounded support of the breast within the bra. The fabric of the bra alone is likely not strong enough to counter the momentum of a breast that weighs almost 1.5kg (D cup).
- Strong underband and full opening mechanism: anything that goes over the head without the underband opening will almost certainly not be supportive enough for bigger breasts.
- Thick and strong cup fabric to offer that initial support.
- Thicker straps to take the weight and offer strength (really important to stop digging in). Consider strap design and if it supports the distribution of weight evenly and widely. Although not a typical design of bra, the ENELL bra demonstrates how a cross back and wide construction can take pressure off the shoulders, which could be useful as an alternative to traditional design.
