Menstruation should never be a barrier to sport. It’s time to talk. Period.
#LetsBreakBarriers
We’re excited to announce that, with The Well HQ in support, adidas have launched the latest Breaking Barriers Academy course.
It’s Time to Talk. Period: Advancing Menstrual Awareness in Sport is an incisive look at training, kit, culture and more; all in the context of the menstrual cycle.
The course is a great learning guide and a valuable entry point for people and coaches who haven’t before considered training in tune with her physiology, or breaking barriers to drive forward equality in sport more generally.
The basics and the power
The course is an opportunity for coaches and aspiring athletes to upskill, learn, and harness the value of each cycle phase. From the basics of menstruation to tracking, and management, this is how to get in the driver’s seat.
As part of the course, three adidas athletes, Jazmin Sawyers (track and field), Michelle Coleman (swimming), and Sarah Zadrazil (football) share their cycle experience in sport and shine light on a topic often hidden from view.
And with that in mind, the course contains powerful pieces around breaking biases in kit, facilities, and culture. There are guides to building healthy coach-athlete relationships as well as how to advocate for greater menstrual awareness in ourselves and the sporting environments around us.
The past, the present, the future
As we know, menstruation and periods have always been shrouded in secrecy, mystery, and stigma. Knowledge is sparse and problems are hidden. Pain is written off as normal. No more.
This new course includes definite actions to take whenever pain gets between you and the sport you love, and definite actions to take to break barriers and make sport a more equitable place tomorrow than it was today.
Tell your daughters, friends, team-mates and spread the word to anyone you think would benefit. For more please check out the Breaking Barriers Academy at the button below and search the social hashtag #LetsBreakBarriers.
